  • Professional Overview
Dave Scriven-Young is an experienced environmental, health, and safety counsel and a trial lawyer for companies and professionals in a wide variety of litigation matters, including disputes involving architects and engineers, contractors, and employers.

He directly advises in-house counsel, executives, and company management on compliance with environmental matters such as RCRA, CERCLA, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and related OSHA issues. In litigation matters, he defends clients against notices of violations and citations issued by U.S. EPA, state environmental agencies, and OSHA, and defends against environmental and toxic tort matters in federal and state courts and the Illinois Pollution Control Board. Dave also provides counsel regarding environmental issues arising in corporate transactions, including permitting, manages and coordinates environmental investigation and remediation at sites around the country, conducts environment compliance audits, and investigates and provides legal response to emergency incidents.

He represents architects, engineers, insurance brokers, attorneys and other professionals in actions alleging professional negligence and malpractice, including the representation of design professionals in contract payment disputes, personal injury cases, property damage suits, and design defect cases.

Dave’s construction expertise includes prosecution and defense of mechanic’s lien actions, payment and performance bond claims, breach-of-contract actions, breach-of-warranty claims, delay and inefficiency claims, contract terminations, and other matters. His expertise also includes defending clients against actions involving personal injuries at job sites.

His employment expertise includes defense of wage and hour, breach of employment contract, sexual harassment, and gender, racial, and national origin discrimination claims in state and federal courts as well as the Illinois Department of Human Rights. He also frequently negotiates employment contracts and termination agreements.

In addition to working closely with his colleagues at O’Hagan Meyer, Dave has built a large network of trusted attorneys through his leadership in national organizations such as the American Bar Association's Litigation Section, Forum on Construction Law, and Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources. This network allows Dave to litigate cases around the country, utilizing local counsel who understand the idiosyncrasies of judges and juries in jurisdictions outside of Illinois.

In addition to his busy practice, Dave takes on pro bono cases and shares his knowledge about trial tactics, legal news, and law firm best practices through his social media channels. He also hosts the "Litigation Radio" podcast, sharing tips for litigators on how to develop their careers, win cases, get more clients, and build a sustainable practice. He is also a sought-after writer and public speaker on legal issues.
