  • Professional Overview

Chris brings over 30 years of experience, first as a trial lawyer practicing in the areas of professional liability insurance defense, insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, and later as an insurance claim executive. Chris joined the San Francisco firm of Long & Levit in 1984 where he specialized in professional liability defense and complex insurance coverage litigation, and served as National Coordinating Counsel for extra contractual suits for a large commercial insurer.  In 1994 Chris accepted a position with CNA Insurance Companies in their world headquarters in Chicago where he held several executive positions over nine years, including AVP for Bad Faith Litigation, and Senior Vice President for Specialty, Professional Liability and International Claims.  In 2003 Chris joined Farmers Insurance as AVP for Suits Against the Exchange (SAE) and Claims Regulatory Compliance and, beginning in 2004, for Commercial Liability Claims.  In 2007 Chris was co-founder of Hiles Borgeson LLP, a Los Angeles law firm that served as national coordinating counsel for suits against the companies of the Farmers Insurance Exchange.

Based on his experience as both insurance defense counsel and claims executive, Chris has developed an innovative and powerful approach to legal services purchasing and litigation management that dramatically improves legal efficiency through better use of communication technology and through alignment of business goals and incentives of insurers and their outside counsel.  In 2014 Chris started Heron Cross Consulting, LLC, providing services as an insurance consultant and expert witness in litigation involving insurance coverage and claim handling and lawyer professional liability related to insurance practice.  Chris has also been a panelist and speaker on topics related to improvement of the quality and value of legal services through better communication and goal alignment between counsel and their clients.
